Background

While I was studying abroad in Barcelona the Spring of 2022, I took on a product design internship at a start-up called Waital. Waital allows you to find products, music, and places that appear in your favorite movies/shows in real time.
The Problem
As the sole product design intern for Waital, I was charged with redesigning Waital's website to integrate its voice recognition system, which can listen to audio from TV movies/shows and based on this, identify what you are watching as well as all the products, places, and music that show up in the specific scene you are watching.
Competitive Analysis
I identified websites/mobile apps with the same or similar objectives as Waital and evaluated their strengths and weaknesses. I also analyzed trends and patterns I saw during my research.
User Research - Poll
In a Google form, I asked potential users of Waital nine questions related to their media consumption and spending and shopping habits. I created this poll in Spanish, aiming to get responses from Barcelona locals. At first, I had difficulty finding Barcelona locals to fill out my form because the only contact I had in Barcelona at the time was my host mom. To solve this issue, I asked professors from my study abroad program, IES, to send the Google form to as many Barcelona locals as they could. I generated 32 responses at the end.
Personas
Based on insights from the poll, I created three user personas, one for each of the following categories: Generation X, millennials, and Generation Z.
User Journeys

I created 3 user journeys for each of the personas to gather users' pain points and opportunities to improve the application. Some of the main pain points I identified include users not being able to use the application in a noisy setting, the price or availability of the product not being shown, and the application leading users to unavailable/broken links. These insights enabled me to redesign the website to enhance customers' experience.
Product requirements

Based on an analysis of Waital’s app as well as all the user research I’ve conducted thus far, I created a list of features that I thought should be included on Waital’s website.
Card Sorting

I asked people to group the product requirements I came up with based on what made sense to them. This helped me decide how to structure the website. I conducted 11 card sorting sessions in total. The instructions were written on the green post-it while the yellow post-its had all the product requirements. Users were free to create as many blue post-its as they wanted and name them however they wished.
Analyzing Results of Card Sorting
To analyze the results of the card sorting sessions, I made an Excel spreadsheet and in each slot I calculated the percentage one feature has been grouped with a different feature. Then, I deleted all the smallest percentages as they won't be used. Finally, I sorted the features so that they belong in groups with other features they were categorized with most often. [Note: include the number of groups]
